Feminism: the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes. Women's rights have come a long way, but females are still earning around 20% less than men according to the Institute for Women's Policy research.
The gap between the genders is slowly dwindling due to the rising feminist movement and importance of equality brought to light through, higher statistics of women receiving higher education, more females in male dominated workforces and Women’s Marche’s.
One of the marches’ purpose was to advocate for gender equality. Women tend not to receive the same salary as a man, even if it is the same job. Women make 78 cents to every dollar a man makes. U.S History teacher, Andy Gibson stated, “Women have the underdog mentality in which they believe that little by little they can achieve more, but in reality this is not happening. Women enter powerful work fields wanting to break the glass or become a trailblazer, and maybe they do, but unfortunately they’re not getting paid the same as men.” According to National Women’s Law Center women are more likely than men, to be in poverty. This is especially true for women of color, single mothers, and elderly women.
Women also face the issue of ‘tampon taxes’. Women are unfairly taxed for a basic necessity while men do not face additional taxes for basic products, such as, deodorant or razors.
Although, the challenges women have to face to reach equality are a burden, women of all ages are rising to the occasion to create a future free of sexism.
