Russia’s cyberattack against both the Democratic National convention (DNC) and members of the Republican political party (GOP) casts a dubious shadow over the U.S. political processes.
Perhaps most concerning is the thought that if Russia can hack into sophisticated organizations, what stops them from breaking into bank accounts or social media profiles?
According to the aforementioned report, much of Russia’s cyber activity was based in social media. According to CNN, Russia employed social media users, more commonly known as “trolls,” to spread fake news about presidential candidate Clinton.
This means that Russia has the capability to influence the American public. This could be a serious problem for the development of American political culture.
“All Americans should be alarmed by Russia’s actions” said former President Obama in a press release in December 2016. Despite the end of the election, this issue remains relevant. Americans need to be aware of the serious potential danger and effects of hacking.
In an investigation conducted by the FBI, CIA, and NSA, it was confirmed that Russia hacked into the Democratic National Convention (DNC) last April as well as “targets associated with both major U.S. political parties” during the months leading up to the election. The most unnerving part of this ordeal is that if the Russians can hack some of the most powerful organizations in the U.S., what is to prevent them from hacking into a normal citizens’ bank accounts?
This is unnerving because Russia influenced what should be free and fair democratic elections. This brings into question the validity of not only the presidency, but also the integrity of the U.S. governmental process.
Georgia Senator John Lewis doesn’t regard Trump as a legitimate president, stating that he thought “the Russians participated in helping (Donald Trump) get elected” “and they helped destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton.”
