A coaching change for the wrestling team that could have led to unrest has worked out extremely well for the team this year. With the introduction of new head coach Nico Saldana, the boys are 1-1 in league and have 5 wrestlers pushing to make the NCS and state meets.
Senior, Noah Bartolome is extremely happy with his team this season, specifically the size of it, stating, “this is the biggest team I’ve been on in my four years of wrestling. It is very encouraging for the future of this sport here at SVHS.”
Not only is the size of the team a positive indication for wrestling going forward, but it has also created higher performance expectations. Senior, Aiden van Heerden explains that, “the competition for the two weight classes has made us better.”
With competition for places, the boys are forced to raise their game in order to be guaranteed a chance to wrestle at every meet.
The coaching change has also brought positivity as Bartolome explained, “Changing coaches has been very positive. It has brought a lot of new energy to the team.”
What could have been a problematic year for the boys’ wrestling team has turned out to be overwhelmingly positive. With so many new wrestlers joining this year, and competition for places getting fiercer, the wrestling team seems to have a bright future.
